The Great Seduction –
NY Times Article
By DAVID BROOKS,
NY Times OP-ED COLUMNIST
(June 10, 2008)
“Money. The Puritan legacy inhibited luxury and self-indulgence. Benjamin Franklin spread a practical gospel that emphasized hard work, temperance and frugality. Millions of parents, preachers, newspaper editors and teachers expounded the message. The result was quite remarkable.
……
Over the past 30 years, much of that has been shredded. The social norms and institutions that encouraged frugality and spending what you earn have been undermined. The institutions that encourage debt and living for the moment have been strengthened”
Article
- Students are learning business strategy by playing entrepreneur.
“The Definition of Character Education”
ASCD website
“Character education involves teaching children about basic human values including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, equality, and respect.
The goal is to raise children to become morally responsible, self-disciplined citizens. Problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution are important parts of developing moral character. Through role playing and discussions, students can see that their decisions affect other people and things.”

Rice and Wrong, Food Costs Flummox
Article at The Street.com by Suzanne Barlyn
Excerpt for the article: Food prices are igniting riots in developing countries — and quietly claiming a chunk of my family’s bottom line. Record rice and wheat prices were clearly reflected in my family’s recent $350 grocery bill for mostly grain-based and dairy products. The continuing global agricultural crisis has obviously ensnared my local community and probably many others.

Resources including a 3 part program which also has online curriculum available. The discussion also includes whether such a program should be mandated in all schools and discuss the pros and cons given the demands schools have on them already and yet the importance of inclusion in a mandated program.

“Most third-graders know two things about money: you need it to buy a Wii, and it doesn’t grow on trees.
While those are important things to understand, they don’t really capture the complexities of a financial world that can baffle the brightest business school student, and they certainly don’t prepare a youngster for the challenges that await them after graduation….”
